Getting started

What is Scrawl AI?

Scrawl AI is an iOS app and web tool that turns a photo or PDF of your homework into a step-by-step solution rendered as a realistic handwritten PDF. Unlike text-based AI tools, the output looks like it was written by hand — with natural character variation, hand-drawn diagrams, and proper math notation.

How do I start using Scrawl AI?

Visit scrawlai.app on any browser, or download Scrawl AI for iPhone and iPad from the App Store. Upload a photo or PDF of your homework; you'll get a handwritten PDF back in about 60 seconds. Your first 3 solves are free, no credit card required.

Do I need to create an account?

For the free tier on web, yes — a lightweight email signup tracks your 3 free solves. On iOS, you can try without an account via the bridge flow. Pro subscriptions require an account for billing.

What file types can I upload?

Images (photos of your homework) and PDFs. On iOS, you can also use the camera to photograph assignments directly or pull from the Files app. Free tier is capped at 10 pages per submission; Pro allows up to 20 pages.

How Scrawl AI works

How does Scrawl AI produce handwritten output?

Scrawl's solver (built on Gemini and Claude models) works through the problem step by step, then a proprietary glyph compositing engine renders each character as handwriting with rotation, baseline drift, and spacing jitter. No two pages are identical.

Is the handwriting detectable as AI?

The output is designed to be indistinguishable from hand-written work. Every character has unique rotation, baseline drift, and spacing jitter applied per page. Scrawl is a tool — how you use it is your call. See our terms for academic integrity guidance.

Can Scrawl draw diagrams?

Yes. Circuit schematics, free body diagrams with labeled force vectors, function plots with axes, chemistry structures with bond notation, and matrices are all rendered in the same hand-drawn style as the rest of the solution.

How long does a solve take?

Typically about 60 seconds for a 1-5 page assignment. Longer assignments (up to 20 pages on Pro) take proportionally longer. You'll see a progress indicator while the solver and renderer work.

Subjects supported

What subjects does Scrawl AI support?

All of STEM and humanities: calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, statistics, computer science, AP History (US, European, World), economics, psychology, sociology, and more. Over 50 subjects total.

Can it solve college-level calculus?

Yes. Calculus I, II, III (multivariable), and vector calculus including Green's, Stokes', and Divergence theorems. Lagrange multipliers and PDEs are also supported. See the calculus sample page for a worked example.

Does it handle electrical engineering?

Yes. DC/AC circuit analysis, Kirchhoff's laws, Thévenin/Norton, op-amps, RC/RL/RLC transients, AC phasor analysis, Bode plots. Schematics are drawn by hand in the solution.

Can Scrawl write history essays?

Yes. AP US, European, and World History DBQs and LEQs are supported. Essays are rendered as multi-page handwritten text with thesis, contextualization, document sourcing (HIPP), and argumentation following the AP rubric.

What about stats and probability?

Hypothesis testing (z, t, chi-square), confidence intervals, linear and multiple regression, ANOVA, and Bayesian inference. Test statistic computations and critical value lookups are shown in handwriting with proper notation.

Pricing and plans

How much does Scrawl AI cost?

Three plans: Free ($0, 3 watermarked solves), Pro Weekly ($6.99/week, unlimited solves), Pro Annual ($69.99/year, unlimited solves + 7-day free trial). Pro Annual averages to roughly $5.83/month — the best value.

Is there a free version?

Yes. 3 free watermarked handwritten solves on iOS and web. No trial, no credit card. Free solves are limited to 10 pages per submission.

How does the 7-day free trial work?

Only Pro Annual includes a trial. Start it at no charge, get full Pro access for 7 days, and cancel any time before day 8 with no charge. If you don't cancel, you're billed $69.99 on day 8 for the year.

How do I cancel?

On iOS: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → Scrawl AI → Cancel. On web: your dashboard Settings → Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep access until then.

Is there a student discount?

Creator promo codes like HARRY or NATE give 15% off Pro Annual for first-time customers. Redeem at scrawlai.app/promo/<code>. Promo codes replace the trial (you pay $59.99 on day one with discount applied).

Is Scrawl AI cheaper than Chegg?

Yes. Chegg Study is $15.95/month (~$191/year). Scrawl Pro Annual is $69.99/year — roughly 63% less. Scrawl also provides handwritten PDF output, which Chegg doesn't. Chegg pricing retrieved April 22, 2026; subject to change.

Custom handwriting

Can Scrawl AI match my handwriting?

Yes, on any paid plan. Draw your letters and symbols in the app or print a template and fill it in by hand. Scrawl processes the samples into a custom font used for all your future solutions. Three presets (Neat, Balanced, Messy) are also available.

How long does training a custom handwriting style take?

About 15 minutes on iPad with Apple Pencil (full-batch grid), or 20-30 minutes on iPhone (3+2 variant boxes). Progress saves between sessions — you can stop and resume any time. Uploads happen in the background so the UI stays responsive.

Can I rename or delete a handwriting style?

Yes. Rename any saved style from the Style tab. Resetting an individual batch lets you redraw those symbols. Styles persist across devices when you're signed in.

Canvas integration

Can Scrawl sync with Canvas?

Yes. Paste a Canvas personal access token in Settings to sync assignment due dates to your Scrawl calendar. No OAuth setup or approval needed — your token stays encrypted server-side.

Can I upload my syllabus?

Yes. Upload a syllabus PDF and Scrawl parses it for assignment titles and due dates, populating your calendar automatically.

Academic integrity

Is using Scrawl AI cheating?

Scrawl is a tool, like Wolfram Alpha, Desmos, or a graphing calculator. Students use it to check work, study worked examples, rewrite messy drafts, and understand solution methods. Every educational tool can be misused — how you use it is your call. Check your school's academic integrity policy before submitting AI-assisted work.

Do teachers know about Scrawl AI?

Some do, some don't. The handwritten output is designed to look like natural handwriting, but your school's policy on AI assistance may prohibit it regardless of appearance. When in doubt, disclose or use Scrawl for study and check-your-work purposes rather than submitted work.

Technical and support

Does Scrawl AI work offline?

No. The solver and rendering pipeline run server-side. You need an internet connection to submit a solve or download a PDF. Once downloaded, the PDF works offline.

What if a solve fails?

If a solve fails (unreadable photo, corrupted PDF, or a subject outside supported scope), you're not charged — your solve balance is refunded. Contact support@scrawlai.app if a specific problem keeps failing.

Is my data private?

Photos and PDFs are processed server-side for the duration of your solve. We don't share content with third parties beyond the AI solver providers. See the full privacy policy for details.

How do I reach support?

Email support@scrawlai.app or use the support page at scrawlai.app/support. Response time is usually within 24 hours.
